A small charter school growing its enrollment while auditors question its finances
AeroSTEM Academy is a free public charter school in Yuba City for grades 5 to 12, built around science, technology, engineering and math through aviation. California pays it per student through the Local Control Funding Formula, so every student enrolled brings money in. The Sutter County Superintendent of Schools authorizes the charter and checks on its finances. A small appointed Board of Directors, not voters, runs the school and hires Executive Director Joseph Clark.
Paid per student
The 2026-27 plan expects $2.92 million in revenue, including $1.86 million from the state formula. More students means more money.
Audit warning
The 2024-25 audit raised substantial doubt the school can keep operating. Net assets were -$109,814 on June 30, 2025.
Appointed board
The board chooses its own new members. It had three voting members after the president left in summer 2026 and planned to appoint another in October.
Charter renewal
The charter runs to June 30, 2027. Staff began rewriting it for renewal in spring 2026.
Things have improved. Enrollment rose from 116 in 2024-25 to 153 in October 2026, the corrected books showed a positive 2025-26 starting balance, and chronic absenteeism fell from 40% to 21%.
