District overview
Agawam Public Schools
School funding, committee decisions and projects underway.

Who funds Agawam schools, and who decides?
The School Committee approves the school budget and district policies. The town provides a municipal appropriation; grants and revolving accounts offset some school costs. The FY27 budget book identifies $2,907,234 in highlighted offsets, including special-education, Title I, school-choice and other funds. These planned offsets are not proof of money received.
Seven committee seats
Six members are elected at large. The mayor serves as the seventh member and chair. Policy, budget and safety subcommittees discuss issues, but their recommendations are separate from full-committee decisions.
FY27 operating plan
The committee approved $55,105,348 on April 28, 2026: $1,542,369 above the adjusted FY26 amount of $53,562,979. The increase is about 2.88% by conventional calculation; the book prints 2.80%.
What drives the budget
Salaries account for $44,028,710 and services for $11,076,638. Special-education tuition, transportation and staffing shape the plan. This is a budget, not actual year-end spending.
Spending per student is a gap
A comparable actual-spending-per-student figure was not established. The budget’s enrollment totals conflict internally, and the September enrollment update refers to a different date. Dividing those figures would imply a comparison the records do not support.
The April committee vote is not, by itself, proof of the town’s final appropriation. June committee minutes report Town Council approval, but the council appropriation record was not part of this review.
Where the district stands
Major projects
High-school construction
Construction underway; phased opening plannedThe September 29 update expects the community wing to open in January 2027 without the new auditorium. Phase two was expected complete in September 2028. - Latest reviewed update described January 2027 community-wing opening and phase-two completion in September 2028.
Funding
The reviewed committee updates do not establish the construction funding mix or total project appropriation. It is separate from the school operating budget shown above.
