District limits student AI to approved tools; some parents ask for a pause

What happened

The district says students can use only a few approved, supervised AI tools (MagicSchool and Snorkl) and cannot use public tools like ChatGPT or companion chatbots on district devices. The board adopted an AI policy (8636) in early 2025, staff presented an AI guidebook on June 4, 2026, and the district posted an online AI FAQ in September. At June and September meetings, some parents asked for a pause on student-facing AI.

Why it matters to families

AI is changing homework and classroom work. Families can see what is allowed today. The board has not voted to pause AI, and a one-year pause for grades K-8 was requested at the Sept. 10 meeting.

The evidence

The district's AI & EdTech page says students do not have access to public AI models or companion chatbots, and that teachers, not AI, set final grades. The June 4, 2026 recording describes the guidebook's 'stoplight' system and AI policy 8636. Public comments at the June 25 and Sept. 10 meetings asked for limits.
