What happened

On June 11, 2026, coming out of a closed meeting, the School Board chair announced that the board had asked Superintendent Dr. Matthew Haas for his resignation and had instructed its legal officer to work out the details, saying the board had an obligation to rebuild trust with the community. She said an interim superintendent would be named within days. Dr. Chandra Hayes now serves as acting superintendent. The chair also said the board would review and amend its policies and practices to address issues raised in the Hollymead and Woodbrook communities.

Why it matters to families

The superintendent runs the division day to day, recommends the budget and hires principals. A departure decided in this way, rather than at the end of a contract, means the board is also reviewing the rules and practices that led to it, and an acting leader is making decisions while that review runs. The division will need a permanent superintendent search on top of the work already under way.

The evidence

The recording of the June 11, 2026 meeting carries the chair's announcement immediately after the board certified its closed session, in which she states that the board asked Dr. Haas for his resignation, that the legal officer has been instructed to work out the details, that an interim superintendent will be named in the coming days, and that policies will be reviewed and amended over the issues raised in those two school communities. The division's own leadership page lists Dr. Matthew S. Haas as superintendent from 2018 to 2026 and Dr. Chandra Hayes as acting superintendent from 2026.
