What happened

The board approved a bilingual course at Middle School South, Middle School North, and Anchor Bay High School. It will provide English learners with literacy and math support and help them work toward English-language proficiency.

Why it matters to families

The approval establishes daytime instructional support for English learners at both middle schools and the high school. District administrators said the course must be board-approved and recorded in the minutes to document services for state funding.

The evidence

At the Sept. 30 meeting, administrators said the course would support students' literacy and mathematics and help them work toward proficiency on the WIDA ACCESS assessment. The board approved it for Middle School South, Middle School North, and the high school; the roll call recorded one no vote. (Transcript, 00:27:49–00:28:33 and 01:15:14–01:16:56.)
