What happened

The Board approved adding preschool to Martin Luther King Jr. Technical High School’s served grades, an eligibility step for Alaska Reads Act funding. The recap says funding depends on ending the tuition requirement, but does not say the tuition change itself was approved.

Why it matters to families

The grade change could help the school obtain state funding for its existing preschool program, while the stated tuition condition means families’ costs may be affected if the district pursues that funding.

The evidence

The Sept. 15 Board recap says King Tech houses a preschool but cannot collect Alaska Reads Act funding because of its design, including a tuition requirement and four-day week. It states adding preschool to the grades served enables funding provided the district no longer has a tuition requirement, and reports Memo #040 was approved 7–0.
