Board approves new school boundaries for about 225 students

Day-to-day

What happened

The School Committee voted 9-0 to approve a redistricting plan. About 200 elementary students move from Thacher to Hyman Fine, and one Coelho neighborhood -- about 25 students -- moves to Wamsutta, both starting the 2026-27 school year.

Why it matters to families

Families in the affected neighborhoods get a new home school and likely a new bus route starting next fall. The district says the changes should also help lower transportation costs, which it says have run a deficit for three years running.

The evidence

The February 9, 2026 minutes record: 'Redistricting: Motion to approve the redistricting plan as presented; Seconded; Vote: 9-0.' Earlier Finance & Budget subcommittee minutes (September 10, 2025 and December 3, 2025) describe the plan moving about 200 elementary students, mostly from Thacher to Hyman Fine, and about 25 students in one middle-school neighborhood from Coelho to Wamsutta.
