Board adopts $1.81 billion budget, sending $630 million to the state

What happened

On June 18, 2026 the board adopted the FY2026-27 budget: $1,536,606,808 for the general fund, $47,509,706 for food service, and $222,192,454 for debt service, for $1,806,308,968 in total spending. Of the general fund, $629,781,625 -- roughly 41% of it -- goes to the state under Chapter 49 'recapture' rather than being spent locally. The budget materials include a district-prepared list of spending and staffing reductions.

Why it matters to families

AISD, like other property-wealthy Texas districts, must send a large share of local tax revenue to the state each year under the state's school-funding formula. The size of that recapture payment alongside a list of reductions means less local money is available for schools even as the district cuts costs.
