Board raises alarm on shelter near elementary school

What happened

Housing Assistance Corporation and Catholic Charities have proposed moving the St. Joseph's House homeless shelter from Winter Street to 460 West Main Street in Hyannis, a site immediately next to Hyannis West Elementary and the Enoch Cobb Early Learning Center, and near Barnstable High School. On June 1, 2026 the School Committee sent a formal letter raising "significant concerns" about student and staff safety, asking the agencies to consider other sites, study the safety impact, and fund any added security the district would need.

Why it matters to families

The School Committee's own attorney confirmed it has no legal power to block or approve the move, which is a municipal zoning decision, so this is the committee's strongest tool: putting its safety concerns on the public record before officials decide. If the relocation goes forward, the district may need to add security staffing and playground supervision at Hyannis West and Enoch Cobb, both serving children as young as three.
