Barnstable Public Schools — High-risk

The school year's most consequential risk items for Barnstable Public Schools began with a financial strain. District enrollment fell to 4,511 students as of October 2025, 170 fewer than five years earlier, and the 2025-26 school year saw 42 more residents leave for other public schools and charters than the year before, most heading to Sturgis Charter, Cape Cod Tech, and virtual schools. In response, the FY27 budget adopted April 1, 2026 cut ten teaching and support positions at Barnstable High School, worth about $975,500, largely by not refilling jobs vacated by retiring teachers.

In June, the board faced a safety concern affecting the youngest students. Housing Assistance Corporation and Catholic Charities proposed moving the St. Joseph's House homeless shelter from Winter Street to 460 West Main Street in Hyannis, immediately next to Hyannis West Elementary and the Enoch Cobb Early Learning Center and near Barnstable High School. On June 1, 2026 the School Committee sent a formal letter raising "significant concerns" about student and staff safety, urging the agencies to consider other sites, study the safety impact, and fund any added security the district would need.

Most recently, the committee has repeatedly convened in closed executive session around an active lawsuit, John Bergonzi v. Barnstable Public Schools, naming the case on public agendas at meetings in February, June, and July 2026 as the grounds for closed-door discussion. The public agendas do not disclose the claims, the amount at stake, or the case's status, keeping its financial and legal exposure to the board behind closed doors as the new fiscal year begins.
