District builds its first rules for AI in the classroom

Day-to-day

What happened

A volunteer team of educators and administrators called the Strategic AI Literacy team presented the district's artificial intelligence work to the School Committee on May 7, 2026, covering how AI use would be overseen and rolled out. The Policy Committee had said in March that an AI policy and a hiring practices policy were under development. A first reading of an academic integrity policy, which is how schools usually set out what counts as cheating with AI, was listed for the August 2026 meeting.

Why it matters to families

AI rules decide what a student may use to do their homework and what counts as their own work, and Barrington is writing those rules now.

The evidence

The May 7, 2026 approved minutes record Dr. Mark Davis and Tonya Curt-Hoard presenting 'Sailing into the Future of AI', covering the foundations and oversight of artificial intelligence and its implementation in the district, supported by the volunteer Strategic AI Literacy team. The March 12, 2026 minutes record the Policy Committee reporting that policies on hiring practices and the use of AI are under development, with an initial AI policy presentation planned for April and a draft in May. The August 6, 2026 agenda lists a first read of an academic integrity policy and a discussion of student screen time and technology use during the school day. No adopted AI policy appears in the collected record.
