Board approves refinancing expected to save about $1 million

What happened
The board approved refinancing its outstanding 2017 bonds to lower their interest rate while keeping the final maturity in 2037. Financial advisers estimated the change could save more than $1 million over the bonds’ remaining life; the sale would proceed only if market conditions and the resolution’s limits are met.
Why it matters to families
Lower interest costs could leave the district with more money for other needs without extending the debt repayment period.
The evidence
At the Oct. 14 meeting, advisers estimated savings of more than $1 million from refinancing the 2017 bonds, with the same March 1, 2037 maturity. The board then approved the bond-refinancing resolution; advisers said the district could pause the sale if market conditions became unfavorable.
