What happened

The Board approved revisions to Policy 2006, Wireless Communication Devices, to align with Michigan’s new student device law. The law requires districts to prohibit student use during instructional time starting in the 2026–27 school year, with rules addressing device definitions, exemptions and enforcement.

Why it matters to families

Students and families will face more specific limits on wireless-device use during instructional time across the district.

The evidence

The minutes included in the September 28 agenda record a 5–0 approval of policy changes recommended by legal counsel. They state that the revisions align with Michigan House Bill 4141 and Senate Bill 495, which require a prohibition on student use during instructional time beginning in 2026–27; they also note that the new law specifies device definitions, exemptions and enforcement expectations.
