What happened

BPS plans to make Hurley and Kilmer PreK–6 schools, ending grades 7 and 8 there, and to expand Boston Arts Academy and Fenway High School to grades 7–12. The changes are scheduled to take effect June 30, 2028; the memo says grade reconfigurations do not require a School Committee vote.

Why it matters to families

Students at the affected schools would have different grade spans and transition points, changing where they may attend as they move through school. The district says the changes are intended to align with its grade-configuration policy and support more continuous pathways.

The evidence

The November 4 memo lists the Hurley and Kilmer changes from PreK–8 to PreK–6 and the Boston Arts Academy and Fenway High School changes to 7–12, effective June 30, 2028. It states that grade reconfigurations align with the 2019 Boston School Committee policy and therefore do not require a committee vote.
