High school "Away for the Day" cell phone policy update: working, but stretches staff

Day-to-day

What happened

Staff told the board the cell phone policy used in BVSD high schools since January 2025 is "not perfect but much better," with overall positive results. Challenges are the administrative time it takes, thinly stretched campus monitors and a small number of repeat offenders. Planned changes for 2026-27 add class and advisory conversations and more explanation to students of why the rule exists.

Why it matters to families

It shows how phone rules affect daily life in high schools and what staff time they require.

The evidence

The June 9, 2026 presentation slides list current state, challenges and future work. The policy text itself was not in the collected documents.
