What happened

Several Emma Havens Young families told the board that aggressive classroom incidents were disrupting first-grade learning and leaving children afraid to attend school. One parent said her son was struck by a chair twice, on Oct. 2 and 16; another described recurring disruptions and classroom evacuations.

Why it matters to families

The reports raise a material safety and learning concern involving young students. Parents said they still lacked clear information about safeguards, and a board member asked administrators to explain how the incidents were being addressed; no response or adopted safety plan appears in the meeting record.

The evidence

At the Oct. 29 meeting, a parent said her first-grade son at Emma Havens Young Elementary School was struck by a chair during classroom behavioral escalations on Oct. 2 and Oct. 16, and asked what safeguards would protect him and classmates. Other parents described ongoing unsafe behavior and evacuations in first-grade classrooms. During board comments, a member called the reports troubling and said he wanted to hear from administration about how they were being addressed. These are parent reports, not findings by the board.
