Burlington Public Schools — Day-to-day

Over the first half of 2026, Burlington Public Schools made a series of policy decisions that reshape day-to-day schedules and costs for families. The oldest development came in January, when the committee approved after-school program changes tied to a 2% staffing-cost increase, including fee increases and possible schedule reductions during low-enrollment periods. The district said it would contact families before deciding whether Marshall Simonds should close at 5:30 instead of 6:00.

In late March, the committee voted 5-0 to continue School Choice at Burlington High for 2026-27, opening up to 10 seats in grade 9 and five each in grades 10, 11, and 12 — 25 seats in total — while opting out for grades K-8.

In late May, the committee declined to continue the elementary early-release pilot for a second year, saying students should spend more time with teachers; educators told the committee that ending it reduces time for curriculum implementation and collaboration. Then in June, district officials confirmed that afternoon late buses will no longer run for middle- or high-school students, the newest of several schedule changes affecting daily routines for families across the district.
