School meals move in-house, with new prices set for 2026-27

Caney Valley Public Schools · Jun 1, 2026

Day-to-day

What happened

On June 1, 2026 the board voted 3-2 to run the child nutrition program in-house from July 1, 2026, ending the arrangement under which Opaa! provided the service. Two district employees were named to run it. At the July 6 meeting the board set the new meal prices: student breakfast free, reduced-price student lunch $0.40, full-price student lunch $4.00, adult breakfast $3.00 and adult lunch $5.00.

Why it matters to families

This changes who cooks and serves every meal in the district and what families pay for lunch. Breakfast becomes free for all students, while full-price lunch is set at $4.00. Bringing the service in-house also moves the food budget and the kitchen staff onto the district's own books at a time when its general fund is under strain.

The evidence

The June 1, 2026 minutes record the motion 'to approve moving Child Nutrition In-House beginning July 1, 2026', carried 3-2 with Gagan and Huffaker voting no, and the appointment of Regina Shivel as Child Nutrition Director and Treva Saucedo as District Child Nutrition Manager. The July 6, 2026 minutes record the unanimous motion approving the meal prices listed above.
