Tenakee Springs learning-center director position proposed for elimination

High-risk

What happened

As part of FY2026 budget cuts, the district proposed eliminating the director position at the Tenakee Springs Independent Learning Center (ILC), the town's only school program. The City of Tenakee Springs passed a resolution asking the board to keep the ILC open and retain its remaining staff, and community members gave extensive public comment warning that losing the program could effectively end schooling in the community.

Why it matters to families

Tenakee Springs has no separate school building; the ILC is the only educational program serving that community, and residents said the teacher housing tied to the position is also the town's only long-term rental housing.

The evidence

The February 11, 2025 minutes record the City of Tenakee Springs resolution; the March 11, 2025 minutes record extended public comment opposing the loss of the director position and the proposed sale of the associated teacher housing. The collected minutes end in May 2025 without a recorded final outcome.

The source

March 11, 2025 approved regular meeting minutes
