How Community Regional Charter School is run and paid for

A public charter school in Somerset County with charter renewal pending and enrollment below target

Community Regional Charter School (CRCS) is a free public charter school based in Skowhegan, Maine, serving PreK-12 learners across three buildings: Creative Children's Academy, Dimensions Academy and Overman Academy. It is overseen by the Maine Charter School Commission, which approves its charter and must renew it for the school to keep operating. Its money comes mainly from state per-student funding, so enrollment drives the budget. A five-member volunteer board, chaired by Theresa Overall, sets the budget and policies and oversees Executive Director Travis Works. Board members are not elected by voters.

Charter renewal

In fall 2026 the Commission's draft recommendation was renewal with conditions, after a February 2026 intervention letter.

Enrollment

About 330 students in September 2026, below the 373 in the renewal application.

Buildings

Three aging buildings on three campuses; an October 2026 agenda proposes selling 48 S. Factory Street and moving programs to 1192 West Ridge Road.

Budget

The 2026-27 budget, about 1% above 2025-26 per the April draft, was adopted May 13, 2026; totals were not published in the minutes.

In May 2026 the school's finance lead said it meets all of the Commission's financial requirements, and its 2025 audit was accepted without reported findings.
