New rules on what students wear, and who can skip final exams

Day-to-day

What happened

The School Committee approved changes to the Coventry High School handbook adding language on disruptive attire and setting out final exam exemptions: ninth graders must sit exams, while students in the upper grades enrolled for the full year may qualify to be excused. It then updated the district's student dress code policy to match. Both handbook and policy votes were 4 to 1, and one member raised concerns about the policy's philosophy section referencing gender neutrality and gender identity, while another asked why hats are allowed at the high school but not in kindergarten to grade 8.

Why it matters to families

Exam exemptions change what a high school student has to do in June, and dress code wording changes what any student can wear on an ordinary morning.

The evidence

The October 9, 2025 approved minutes record the assistant superintendent explaining the final exam exemption proposal, that ninth graders will be required to take an exam while students in the upper grades enrolled for the full year may qualify for an exemption, and the addition of language regarding disruptive attire to the handbook, with the handbook approved 4-1 and the first reading of the JICA dress code policy approved 4-1. The October 23, 2025 minutes record the 6-0 second reading, the questions about hats in kindergarten to grade 8, and a member's concern about the philosophy section's references to gender neutrality and gender identity. The handbook and policy texts were not filed with the minutes.
