District news

District reports it now spends the least per pupil of any Rhode Island district

Financial

What happened

At the April 9, 2026 meeting the superintendent presented state per-pupil expenditure data showing Cumberland at $16,887 per student, the lowest figure in Rhode Island and about $3,000 behind the next lowest district. He told the committee the gap is widening because enrollment keeps rising while funding does not keep pace. The committee then voted 6-0, with Keri Smith abstaining, to endorse the Blue Ribbon Commission report on redesigning how Rhode Island funds its schools; the finance director said the district is owed about $23 million under the formula in that report.

Why it matters to families

Per-pupil spending is the plainest measure of what a district can afford to put in front of students. Cumberland's position at the bottom of the state table is the background to every staffing cut the committee debated this year, and it is the reason the district is lobbying for a change in the state funding formula.

The evidence

The approved April 9, 2026 minutes record the superintendent stating the district is still the lowest at $16,887, roughly $3,000 behind the next lowest, and record the 6-0 vote with one abstention to approve a letter of support for the Blue Ribbon Commission report along with the finance director's $23 million figure.
