What happened

The district is proposing a rule requiring a reasonable attempt to notify a parent before searching a student in a non-emergency situation. The change is listed for first reading at the Nov. 9 board meeting and has not yet been adopted.

Why it matters to families

This would add a parent-notification step before routine student searches, while leaving emergency situations outside the proposed requirement; the proposal does not guarantee that a parent will be reached before a search.

The evidence

The Nov. 9 superintendent’s notes say the proposed amendment to Model Policy 3231 would require “a reasonable attempt to notify a parent prior to conducting a search of a student in a non-emergency situation,” and list it among recommended policy amendments for first reading. (Document 137018.)
