County approves budget with recurring-deficit warning

What happened
The county approved Desert Sands’ budget while projecting unrestricted deficits of $4.9 million, $3.4 million and $6.0 million over three years.
Why it matters to families
The district needs recurring spending discipline as attendance funding declines. The county still found positive balances, adequate cash and required reserves; this is not a finding of imminent insolvency.
The evidence
The August 28 county letter lists all three unrestricted deficits, approves the budget and LCAP, and calls for monitoring enrollment and spending. The 3% reserve requirement is a minimum floor, not the total reserve balance.
