Dothan board sends proposed AI reading tutor back for more review

What happened
The board did not approve the proposed Amira Learning reading-intervention program at its Oct. 27 meeting and asked to bring it back for further consideration at the Nov. 17 meeting. Staff proposed using nearly $200,000 in state technology funds; coaches and interventionists would use it first, with access planned for all staff next year.
Why it matters to families
The proposal would add AI-based reading assessment and tutoring as a supplement to existing literacy support—not replace teachers or the district’s reading program. Families should know the service is still under review and has not been approved for rollout.
The evidence
At the Oct. 27 meeting, staff described Amira as a reading assessment, intervention, and tutoring program available to all schools, and said it would initially be used by coaches and interventionists, then made available to all staff the following year. A board member described the cost as almost $200,000; staff said the money was state advanced-technology funding, not local funds. The motion did not pass for lack of a majority, and the board agreed to put the item back on the Nov. 17 agenda for further consideration.
