District news
Esmeralda board to consider letting families apply to other district schools

What happened
The board is scheduled to consider a second-reading policy allowing families to apply for a place at a district school outside their attendance zone. The draft uses grade-level capacity limits and gives families 10 business days to appeal a denial; the abbreviated 2026–27 application cycle cannot open until the state approves the district’s system or the superintendent documents a need to avoid disadvantaging families.
Why it matters to families
If adopted, families could seek a school outside their assigned zone, but placement would depend on available grade-level seats. The draft says transportation is not generally guaranteed for open-enrollment placements, apart from transportation required by law or limited authorization on an existing route.
The evidence
The November 10, 2026 agenda lists the Intradistrict Open Enrollment Policy for a second reading and possible action on the superintendent’s recommendation. The attached draft regulation covers Dyer Elementary/Middle School, Goldfield Elementary/Middle School, and Silver Peak Elementary/Middle School; it sets application and appeal procedures and special conditions for the 2026–27 abbreviated cycle. This is a proposal, not an adopted decision.
