Business official says tax levy increase was cut from 2.48% to 1.9%

Financial

What happened

On Oct. 7, Assistant Superintendent for Business Michael Motisi said voters approved a 2026-27 tax levy increase of 2.48%. He said the district lowered it to 1.9%, a cut of $831,354, after a Babylon IDA property repaid about $800,000 in taxes it had owed.

Why it matters to families

This changes what families pay. Mr. Motisi said new county tax rates mean the average Babylon-side homeowner will see a decrease, while Nassau-side homeowners will see an increase above the approved levy increase.

The evidence

Auto-generated captions of the Oct. 7 recording quote Mr. Motisi: "we lowered the levy by $831,354, which reduced the levy increase ... from the voter approved 2.48% to 1.9%." The 2026-27 tax levy resolution adopted Sept. 9 and the budget documents give the underlying figures. Captions are machine-made and may contain errors.
