District news
Garden City proposes one-year extension for current in-district transfers

What happened
The district is proposing to let students with an approved in-district transfer for 2026–27 stay at that school for 2027–28 without reapplying. The one-year exception would require the student to remain in good standing, live in the district, and attend a school serving their grade; it would expire June 30, 2028.
Why it matters to families
Families who already received a transfer could avoid a new application for the following school year, giving students continuity while the district prepares for boundary changes. The proposal does not create an ongoing right to attend the transfer school after 2027–28.
The evidence
The October 12, 2026 agenda marks the JBCDA student-transfer policy update as a first read. The accompanying memo says the current policy limits parent-requested transfers to one year and recommends allowing an additional year pending boundary redrawing; the draft policy includes a transition provision for students approved for 2026–27, subject to good-standing, residency, and grade-level conditions.
