743 new homes could bring hundreds of pupils, and the township has not told the district

What happened

At the September 21, 2026 meeting two residents pressed the board about a proposal for roughly 743 homes on a former golf course, in an area zoned for far lower density. They cited estimates of 200 to 325 additional children in a pre-kindergarten-to-grade-eight district and asked for a written capacity and cost analysis before an October 28, 2026 zoning hearing. The superintendent said the township's departments had not formally contacted the district about the development. The district's own audited accounts already anticipate growth, saying that 'with continued housing growth, the District believes we will start to see increased enrollment', and its 2026-27 budget projects enrolment rising to 6,610 from 6,525.

Why it matters to families

Gloucester Township is one of the few districts in this part of New Jersey where enrolment is going up rather than down, and it has eleven school buildings to fit the children into. If several hundred more arrive without the township and the district having compared notes, the result is crowded classrooms and a scramble for space or a tax referendum.

The September 21, 2026 recording has the superintendent's answer: 'those departments that you referenced from the township as far as official communication to to my office, they have not done so.' The transmittal section of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for the year ended June 30, 2025 states: 'With continued housing growth, the District believes we will start to see increased enrollment as these developments come on line.' The 2026-27 user-friendly budget projects on-roll enrolment of 6,610 for October 2026 against 6,525 in October 2025.
