District pauses its AI policy to bring in parents first

What happened

Instead of voting on a rule for how students and teachers can use artificial intelligence, the Policy Subcommittee stopped work on the policy on June 8 and asked the district to form an AI Advisory Group of parents, students, and community members to write recommendations first. As of the August 12 School Committee agenda, the policy still had not come back for a final vote.

Why it matters to families

This is the rule that will decide what AI tools students and teachers are allowed to use in class, and how. The district chose to let families help write it rather than deciding on its own.

The June 8 Policy, Program and School Committee Handbook Subcommittee minutes record the vote to 'endorse the AI Advisory Group and halt on a policy until that group has presented recommendations,' which the subcommittee then brought to the full School Committee two days later.
