LIPA tax deal cuts the district's 2026-27 tax levy increase to 1.75%, but shrinks the tax base

Financial

What happened

A Sept. 28, 2026 board presentation says the Long Island Power Authority, the district's biggest taxpayer, will pay through a PILOT deal with Huntington instead of normal taxes. The district now figures its 2026-27 property tax levy increase at 1.75%, down from the 3.31% in the May budget vote. In 2025-26 LIPA was billed $4.6 million for the district and paid $3.7 million.

Why it matters to families

A smaller starting levy lowers what the district can raise in later years, while other taxpayers cover the gap between old taxes and the PILOT. Families may see different tax bills than expected.

The evidence

The slide deck states the levy is now recalculated to a 1.75% increase and that PILOTs lower the allowed levy for future years. It does not show the final tax rate.
