District news
Hazel Valley families and educator report special-education staffing and safety concerns

What happened
At the September 16 meeting, a Hazel Valley teacher and several family members reported insufficient paraeducator support for students with disabilities, including one parent’s report that her nonverbal daughter was bitten again after a one-to-one aide was no longer assigned. Speakers also warned of supervision gaps, elopement risks and missed IEP services; these were public testimony, not findings by the board.
Why it matters to families
The reports describe potential student-safety risks and failures to deliver legally required special-education supports, warranting attention from families and the district. The transcript records allegations from speakers and does not establish that the district verified them.
The evidence
In public testimony, a Hazel Valley special-education teacher said her allocation was 10.5 para hours per day despite one student's IEP requiring dedicated one-to-one support, and said IEP services could go undelivered when staff are reassigned. A parent said her nonverbal five-year-old was bitten by a student who had bitten her twice the prior year, after that student's one-to-one support was not in place this year. Other Hazel Valley parents raised supervision and elopement concerns. All are speakers' reports in the September 16, 2026 transcript (document 95091).
