State Board overview
Indiana State Board of Education
Who makes statewide decisions, how school funding works, and what is underway.

State policy and local school decisions
The State Board sets academic standards, accountability rules and other statewide education policies. Local school boards choose curricula and run their schools. State school support combines a foundation amount with demographic and program-based funding; these school allocations are distinct from the State Board’s own operating costs.
Eleven members
Eight are appointed by the Governor, two by legislative leaders, and the Secretary of Education serves by office.
School funding varies
Foundation funding is supplemented by complexity and program grants, including special education, career education and language support. The Attorney General’s July 2026 guide describes this structure; this page does not calculate school allocations.
Spending remains a gap
The reviewed records do not establish the Board’s current operating expenditure or a comparable per-student spending amount.
Governance and funding
State formula allocations to schools are not Board operating spending.
