Board adopts multiple state-law-driven policy changes affecting curriculum, gifted programming, and open enrollment

Iowa City Community School District · Aug 25, 2026

Curriculum

What happened

The board reviewed and is adopting numerous policy updates required by recent Iowa legislation, including removal of 'multicultural, gender fair, and global perspective' language from curriculum policy, cancellation of the Multicultural Gender Fair Education policy (603.4), new uniform gifted-and-talented identification procedures (604.03), new physical education/fitness testing requirements under the 'Iowa Make America Healthy Again' law, and modified open enrollment/charter school procedures.

Why it matters to families

These are consequential curriculum and instructional-program changes mandated by state law that alter how gifted students are identified, how multicultural curriculum content is framed, and how physical education and open enrollment are administered districtwide.

The evidence

Director Lingo's detailed policy primer walkthrough referencing House File 2670 (curriculum/summative assessment language changes), cancellation of policy 603.4, Senate File 220 (gifted and talented uniform procedures), House File 2676 (physical fitness testing), and House File 2754 (open enrollment/charter school changes).
