Board asks county agency to weigh school costs of proposed 30-year SouthWorks tax break

Financial

What happened

On July 20, 2026 board members discussed a requested 30-year tax abatement for the first phase of the SouthWorks housing project (about 230 affordable units). Members said they estimate about 150 students and close to $4 million a year in school costs, which they said would exceed the tax payments. The board voted unanimously to send the Tompkins County IDA a letter about the district's expected costs.

Why it matters to families

A long tax break can mean less property tax money for schools while new students still need to be taught. The IDA, not the school board, decides on the break.

The evidence

The July 20, 2026 special meeting summary records the discussion, the estimates attributed to board members and the unanimous vote to prepare a letter. The estimates are members' statements, not an audited figure.
