District drafts new rules on AI use and academic honesty

What happened

The district is writing a new Academic Honesty policy (BP/AR 5131.9) that would set the first explicit district rules on student use of artificial intelligence tools, alongside related updates to its internet-use, electronic-communication, and student-records policies. As of the August 3, 2026 policy committee meeting the draft was still contested and unresolved: administration and a board member each submitted competing versions of the AI language, and the item was postponed again to the next work session.

Why it matters to families

This is the policy that will set the ground rules for whether and how students may use AI tools like ChatGPT on schoolwork, and what counts as cheating — a day-to-day question for every classroom once it is finalized.
