District news
District updates policies on student and family privacy rights

What happened
The board approved policy changes restricting collection and disclosure of student and family immigration-status information and requiring parents to be notified of their children’s right to public education regardless of immigration status. It also updated student-and-family privacy rules to reflect a court order barring staff from misleading parents about a student’s gender presentation or using a different name or pronoun over a parent’s objection.
Why it matters to families
These districtwide rules affect what information the district may collect or share and what parents are told about their children, making them important protections and obligations for families.
The evidence
September 10 minutes record board approval of updates to BP 0410 and BP/AR 5022 (motion carried 3-0). The accompanying CSBA policy guide says AB 495 prohibits most collection and disclosure of immigration-status information and requires notice of students’ right to free public education regardless of status; it also describes BP 5022 updates reflecting the Mirabelli v. Bonta court order concerning parent notifications and names/pronouns when a parent objects. Documents 105318 and 105347.
