District news
Lawrence approves five additional preschool classrooms at four schools

What happened
The board approved up to $185,000 for furniture and materials for five additional preschool classrooms at Hillcrest, Kennedy Early Childhood Center, Sunflower, and Deerfield. The district says preschool interest exceeds current classroom capacity and that the added rooms will use available space in neighborhood schools.
Why it matters to families
The project adds preschool capacity in four school communities to address demand, potentially giving more families access to district preschool without a major building project.
The evidence
The Aug. 24, 2026 minutes state that preschool enrollment interest exceeds available district classroom capacity and that five additional classrooms will be equipped at the four named locations. The board approved the purchase, not to exceed $185,000, from capital outlay funds (item 2.5).
