District news
Lawrence rolls out school procedures for civil law-enforcement visits
What happened
Lawrence Public Schools says its civil law-enforcement policy and protocols are posted and is preparing staff training and family communications. The district said staff may decline to engage with officers and defer to an administrator; it is also adding an emergency-guardianship question to enrollment so families can share arrangements schools may need to access.
Why it matters to families
The procedures affect how staff respond to civil law-enforcement activity at school and give families a way to communicate emergency guardianship information, making implementation relevant to student and family protections.
The evidence
At the October 7 meeting, district officials said the policy and protocols were posted; all staff would review them through Vector training, including guidance that staff need not engage with an officer and may defer to an administrator. Officials also described providing families emergency-planning resources and adding an emergency-guardianship question to the Family Resource Center enrollment process and PowerSchool profile (video transcript 03:13:51–03:17:47).
