What happened

A district committee recommended McGraw Hill’s new K–12 literacy program, and administrators plan to bring a purchase proposal to the board in January or February; the board received information only on Nov. 2 and did not approve a purchase. The program would replace three separate district literacy curricula with one structured-literacy program, with materials targeted for March if approved.

Why it matters to families

This would change core reading and writing instruction across elementary, middle, and high school, aligning it with structured-literacy methods and creating a common program across grade levels. Families should know the purchase and implementation are still pending board consideration.

The evidence

At the Nov. 2, 2026 meeting, the curriculum report said the committee supported McGraw Hill’s K–12 Emerge (K–5), Summit (6–8), and Soar (9–12) program. The presenter explicitly said no purchase was being brought that night and proposed bringing one in January or February; if approved, materials were desired by March. The report said Lewis Central currently has three different literacy curricula and described state direction to move away from balanced literacy toward structured literacy.
