Maine committee advances lower local cost shares for school construction aid

What happened
Maine’s School Construction Committee voted to advance a proposal lowering the cost-sharing percentages for major school construction projects to 20%, 10% and 0%. The change is proposed, not adopted; it would go to a second public comment period and hearing.
Why it matters to families
The local share can affect whether communities can pursue state-supported major school construction projects. The committee cited concerns that some communities could not meet the original proposed cost-sharing requirements.
The evidence
At its October 5, 2026 meeting, the committee selected Option C after reviewing financial examples from 16 school administrative units. Option C sets the Section 11(4) cost-sharing percentages at 20%, 10% and 0%, replacing the earlier proposed Option A percentages of 50%, 35% and 25%. The committee voted unanimously to recommend the updated amendment and advance it for a second comment period and public hearing; this was not final rule adoption.
