What happened

Marshalltown ended FY26 after spending about $7 million more than it brought in, reducing its general-fund balance from $9.9 million to $2.56 million. Its solvency ratio fell from 12.35% to 2.25%, below the district’s 8–10% policy minimum; administrators said they had already made $2 million in cuts and were still analyzing further budget adjustments.

Why it matters to families

The district’s cash reserves are well below its own policy benchmark, increasing pressure to find additional savings and leaving less financial flexibility.

The evidence

At 2:28:47, the finance presentation reports the solvency ratio fell from 12.35% in FY25 to 2.25% in FY26; it identifies the board policy minimum as 8–10%. At 2:30:39–2:31:10, it reports the general fund fell from $9.9 million to $2.56 million, about $7 million in deficit spending, and says $2 million in reductions had been made with further budget analysis underway.
