FY2027 budget continues cuts as enrollment keeps falling

What happened

MSBSD's adopted FY2026 budget already cut school discretionary budgets 15%, department budgets 18%, the transportation subsidy 13%, and eliminated 159 positions. In December 2025 the district told the board that enrollment has been declining since 2024 and is expected to keep falling, and a March 2026 budget work session was titled "Proposed Reductions." The board adopted the FY2027 budget on June 3, 2026. By August 2026, opening enrollment stood at roughly 14,508 students headed toward an expected 18,737 -- down from about 19,700 enrolled districtwide a few years earlier.

Why it matters to families

Falling enrollment means less state and local funding under Alaska's per-student formula, which is why the district has been cutting programs, staff, and department budgets two years running. Continued decline points to further reductions ahead.
