Three new charter schools under construction districtwide

What happened

Funded by a 2024 borough bond, MSBSD has been building three new charter-school buildings at once: Birchtree Charter School, Academy Charter School, and American Charter Academy (which broke ground in September 2025). The board approved successive design milestones for Birchtree and Academy Charter through the year -- 35%, 65%, and 95% design -- and approved construction of the Academy K-12 campus expansion on June 3, 2026.

Why it matters to families

This is the district's largest active facilities program, adding capacity and new school options across the Mat-Su Valley, funded by voter-approved debt rather than the operating budget that is otherwise being cut.
