Thomas Hunter Middle School closed; students moved to Mathews Elementary
What happened
Starting in 2026-27, Thomas Hunter Middle School's students are consolidated into Mathews Elementary School (grades K-7). On June 16, 2026 the board renamed the building the Thomas Hunter Education Center, to house division and county offices and community uses.
Why it matters to families
Families of middle-grade students have a new school, building and routine, and one of the county's schools no longer operates as a school.

June 16, 2026 meeting video, item 7.4 resolution: "effective for the 2026-2027 school year, the student body of Thomas Hunter Middle School is being consolidated with Mathews Elementary School, resulting in the official closure of Thomas Hunter Middle School as an active middle school." Motion passed.
