Cafeterias use optional finger scans to identify students

Day-to-day

What happened

The food service report to the board on June 17, 2026 describes fingerprint-style finger scanning at lunch checkout, optional for grades 1 and up. Enrollment is about 90% in elementary, 83% in middle and 7% in high schools. The district served 880,664 lunches and 440,731 breakfasts, with free meals for all students.

Why it matters to families

Finger scans collect a child's biometric data. A parent told the board in March 2026 that he feared his kids would lose free meals by opting out; the board said there is no penalty for declining.

The evidence

The June 17, 2026 presentation gives the enrollment rates and meal counts. The board's March 2026 reply is on its public input page.
