Montana Board sets conditions for statewide assessment changes

What happened
On June 22, 2026, the Board conditionally approved the Superintendent’s recommended changes to the statewide MAST math and English-language-arts assessment system. The approval requires OPI, working with the Board, to convene a task force on instructional usefulness, score reporting, testing burden and feedback, professional development, and educator trust in data. The minutes do not establish later implementation.
Why it matters to families
The assessment is used statewide, so changes could affect how students are tested and how families receive score information. The Board’s conditions require more work before the minutes can establish implementation.
The evidence
The official June 22 minutes record the unanimous conditional approval and enumerate the required task-force topics. They establish the Board’s decision and conditions, not implementation.
