Armed staff Guardian program approved; board now needs only a majority to approve each guardian
What happened
In May 2026 the board voted 5-1 to start a Guardian program that lets trained volunteer staff carry guns on campus. In July it wrote into policy that each guardian needs a unanimous board vote. On October 12, 2026, with two trustees absent, it voted 5-0 to change that to a simple majority and added annual active-shooter training and shooting qualification.
Why it matters to families
Who may carry a gun around students is decided by board vote, and the change makes approval easier. Parents and staff spoke against the program at several meetings, while district surveys showed most parents and staff who responded supported it.
