What happened

The School Committee approved funding for an adult monitor on the elementary METCO bus, beginning around November 1. The monitor is intended to support the 14 elementary-age METCO students expected to ride the bus, whose daily commute between Boston and Natick exceeds two hours.

Why it matters to families

An additional adult can assist students and respond to needs while the driver focuses on operating the bus, providing added supervision during a long commute.

The evidence

The committee voted 4–0 to transfer up to $27,800 from the executive assistant salary line to METCO contract services for a monitor for up to 139 school days. The motion allowed contracted services at $200 per day or an internal stipend, subject to approval of a new compensation-schedule line. A parent described the 14 riders and commute; the superintendent said the monitor would help with student organization and communication, while distinguishing it from separately addressed bus-stop concerns.
