Eight geographic districts elect the Board

Nonpartisan elected State Board

The Board sets statewide policy and appoints the Commissioner, who administers NDE. It oversees standards, accreditation and education programs; local boards and schools have separate operating responsibilities. Department grants and requests do not establish the State Board’s own operating costs.

Elections and representation

One member represents each of eight districts for a four-year term. Districts 5–8 appear on the November 3, 2026 final general-election candidate list.

Committees and public meetings

Executive, Budget and Finance, Planning and Evaluation, and Rules and Regulations committees report to the Board. Available full-Board minutes distinguish reports, discussions and votes.

Spending remains incomplete

No separate Board operating appropriation, detailed spending or comparable per-pupil amount was established in the reviewed records.
